RHEL 8.1 improves performance, security and management

Red Hat announced earlier this week the general availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1, the first version of its enterprise Linux platform that delivers on the release cadence announced at Red Hat Summit 2019, with new versions every six months. The company has strived to improve the management capabilities, security and performance of this operating system.

With the aim of providing a smarter management through process automation, RHEL 8.1 includes access to Red Hat Insights, Red Hat’s proactive analysis service, which will now be available for free for all Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscribers. With the same purpose, new System Roles have been added, simplifying the configuration of subsystems to manage specific functions such as storage, networks, synchronization, kdump and SELinux.

As for security, full support for live kernel patching has been incorporated, so that the IT team can guarantee the highest level of security without incurring downtime. In addition, container-centered SELinux profiles are included. This allows to create more customized security policies to control how containerized services access host system resources.

To facilitate the development of applications for the hybrid cloud, the latest stable versions of the most popular Open Source tools and languages, such as golang and .NET Core, have been included. The ability to enhance modern data processing workloads has also been added, including Microsoft SQL Server and SAP solutions.

Following this same line, for the first time RHEL includes the following communities, projects and programs to meet the specific needs of developers: Fedora, CentOS Stream, Red Hat Universal Base Image and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Developer Subscription .

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.1 can now be purchased or updated through the Red Hat Customer Portal. Members of the Red Hat developer program can also request access to this new version for free.
