Nutanix and UDS Enterprise VDI, one of the best case studies

by | Oct 29, 2021

The desktop virtualization project with UDS Enterprise and Nutanix at Mondragon Unibertsitatea has been selected by MuyComputerPro as one of the 20 best digital transformation processes of 2021. The launch of the VDI platform with UDS Enterprise allowed this educational center to continue its academic activity without interruptions when the state of alarm for Covid-19 was decreed.

Thanks to UDS Enterprise’s VDI technology, students could follow their classes online from their homes, remotely accessing all the software and applications they need for their studies. They already had a pilot running with this solution, so moving to production with an infrastructure in high availability that supports the connection of 300 students simultaneously was quick and easy. To do this, Lanmedia Comunicaciones helped them set everything up to deploy 200 virtual desktops without a graphics card and another 100 with GPUs.

Jesús Lizarraga, the Information Systems Coordinator at Mondragon Unibertsitatea, explains that “what began as a pilot for the following year, ended up becoming an indispensable platform for students and teachers, allowing the continuity of the teaching activity without any issue during the months of lock-down.”

The VDI solution of this university consists of the UDS Enterprise connection broker and the Nutanix Acropolis hypervisor. The AHV virtualization solution has been deployed on a Nutanix hyper-converged cluster. UDS Enterprise is in charge of “launching virtual desktops. It is a connectivity solution for VDI environments mainly. It is something widely used especially in sectors such as the university,” says Lizarraga.

The flexibility of studying and working 24×7, from anywhere and using any device was welcomed by users as a great advantage. Proof of this is that the Mondragon Unibertsitatea VDI platform is being used more and more. “Online training has exploded and there are many students who use these solutions,” says the coordinator of the Telematics Area.

In addition to students, administration and services staff and professionals who work remotely also use the solution daily, positioning itself as a great alternative to university VPNs.
