A new Linux distribution is born: Serpent OS

Posted by UDS Enterprise Team |

At the end of this month of July, the development of a new Linux distribution will begin, which promises to be different from the rest. Serpent OS will challenge the usual conventions that Linux users are used to. In fact, it is not oriented to the masses, but to the most purist linuxers. It will be modular and optimized for modern machines.

This new operating system will incorporate the design improvements that have been introduced in Linux such as:

  • There will be no usrbin divisions.

  • It will be 100% compiled with Clang, including the kernel.

  • Will take musl as libc, relying on compiler optimizations instead of inline asm.

  • libc ++’ as a substitute for ‘libstdc ++’.

  • LLVM’s binutils variants (lld, as, etc.).

  • Mixed source and binary distribution.

  • It will move away from the x86_64-generic ’lines to focus on newer CPUs, with specific optimizations for AMD and Intel.

  • Capability based subscriptions in package manager (Hardware, user choice, etc).

  • It will only support UEFI, no legacy boot.

  • Fully Open Source, including bootstrap and rebuild scripts.

  • Truly optimized for significant workloads.

  • Third party applications will only rely on in containers. There will be no compatible hacks.

  • It will only work with Wayland. Providing X11 compatibility via containers will be evaluated.

  • Will include administration tools and update patches.

Ikey Doherty is the leader of this project. He was the founder and until two years ago the main developer of the Solus distribution. More features of this new distro will be revealed little by little on their official website.
