Fedora 31 officially released

Fedora 31 is now available for download. One of its most outstanding new features is Fedora Toolbox, a simple tool to start and manage personal workspace containers, which allows developments in an isolated environment. According to Matthew Miller, the project leader, this containerized workflow "is vital for users of the ostree-based Fedora variants such as CoreOS, IoT and Silverblue", although it is also useful in any workstation or server system.

Among the changes introduced in this new version, it should be noted that it ceases to support 32-bit x86 architectures. Of special interest to Docker users is the enablement of CgroupsV2. And for everyone, the update of numerous packages, such as Glibc 2.30 and NodeJS 12, as well as the migration to Python 3.

The novelties of this new release are introduced in all its different versions, popularly called “flavors”. Fedora Workstation is aimed at software developers looking for a functional Linux experience. It incorporates the desktop environment GNOME 3.34, with performance improvements that will be noticed especially in low-power hardware devices.

Another flavor is Fedora Server, which comes with the latest advances in Open Source server software and can be implemented very easily. Fedora CoreOS was specially designed for container systems; Fedora IoT for edge-computing and Fedora Spins and Labs includes desktop environments such as KDE Plasma and Xfce.

In addition, Fedora 31 is available for x86_64 architectures and for alternatives such as ARM AArch64, Power and S390x.
