Software used in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse goes open

Sony Pictures Imageworks has open sourced one of the tools used in the post-production process of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. This is OpenColorIO, a complete color management solution geared towards motion picture production with an emphasis on visual effects and computer animation.

This software has been donated to the Academy Software Foundation, an organization created with the aim of promoting open source in the film industry, and which is part of the Linux Foundation.

Michael Ford, vice president of Sony Pictures Imageworks, explained in a statement that they wanted “to donate OpenColorIO to the community that trusts it, and the Academy Software Foundation is the logical choice. The developers and companies that use it every day will mark the roadmap of the project, starting with its tools and the pace of launches for the new 2.0 version”.

In addition to the latest production of the popular spiderman, OpenColorIO has been used in movies such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Transylvania Hotel 3 or Alice in Wonderland.

Now the community of developers have at their disposal the code of this tool to improve it and adapt it to their needs, to make it a much more comprehensive and optimized solution.
