Microsoft Corp. has confirmed that it has reached an agreement to buy GitHub, the most popular software development platform to date, used by more than 28 million developers to exchange knowledge, share and collaborate on different projects.
The company has announced its intention to empower developers, accelerate the growth of GitHub and its use in the enterprise while taking advantage of this new acquisition so that its own services reach a new audience.
Under the terms of the agreement, which is expected to be closed by the end of this year, Microsoft will acquire GitHub for 7,500 million dollars in Microsoft shares. Said agreement is subject to the usual closing conditions and to the regulatory review.
Microsoft ensures that GitHub will maintain its philosophy that is centered on the developer, and operate independently to provide an open platform for all developers in all industries. Developers can continue to use the programming languages, tools and operating systems they choose for their projects, and they can continue to implement their code in any operating system, in any cloud, and on any device.
