How to achieve an optimal VDI Linux experience

by | Oct 30, 2017

The success of Linux VDI deployments is based on the proper choice of all components that make up the infrastructure. Regardless of the chosen connection broker, experts warn that only a correct combination of the connection protocol and the Linux window manager will provide a good user experience.

Therefore, in order to make a VDI platform work properly, it is advisable to follow the recommendations of the experts, be they integrators, manufacturers or even the user community itself. Their experience will guide us in how to combine connection protocols such as SPICE, X2GO, RDP, RGS, PCoIP… with window managers such as GNOME, KDE, XFCE or MATE, among others, to obtain an unbeatable desktop virtual Linux user experience.

Hundreds of thousands of users around the world have reported an optimal experience using Linux virtual desktops deployed with the VDI connection broker UDS Enterprise, thanks to IT administrators who have taken into account the recommendations mentioned above.

Major vendors and developers of Open Source virtualization software, such as Red Hat, oVirt, OpenStack and OpenNebula have certified the seamless integration of their products with UDS Enterprise.

UDS Enterprise shares the Open Source philosophy of the organizations that drive these projects. As a sign of support for innovation with Free Software, the company that develops this software, VirtualCable, has joined the Open Invention Network (OIN), a global organization whose goal is to protect the Linux ecosystem. In addition, the source code for this connection broker is available on GitHub so that it can be edited and redistributed.

Being software based on Open Source, different communities of developers have decided to use UDS Enterprise as a fundamental pillar of new projects. This is the case of the Remote PC with OpenGnsys project, developed by the University of Seville, which allows remote access through UDS Enterprise not only to VDI but also to physical computers of the university’s ICT classroom durinf non-school hours, from any place and using any device. Another example is the Virtual PC Plugin, developed by the UDS Enterprise team in collaboration with the University of Málaga, which allows UDS Enterprise to be integrated with Moodle to provide remote desktop services through the world’s most widely used Open Source learning platform.

It is no coincidence that these educational organizations have chosen UDS Enterprise as the basis for their projects since it is the VDI broker most used by Spanish universities; and training centers around the world use it to deploy their Windows and Linux virtual desktops. In fact, a few years ago, UDS Enterprise was chosen as the best On-Premise VDI technical and economic solution, and second in Cloud Model by a committee formed of 32 experts from more than 20 universities, that evaluated 15 solutions of the whole world market within the “Desktop Virtualization Project (known as VES project in Spanish)”powered by Crue-TIC and RedIRIS.
