Universities deploy thousands of Linux desktops with UDS

by | Oct 23, 2017

Undoubtedly one of the outstanding features of our VDI connection broker UDS Enterprise is native support of Linux desktops. In fact, in many cases it has been a decisive feature for our customers to opt for our software. This is the case of the Autonomous University of Madrid . Julio Álvarez, Systems Manager of the IT Support Technical Unit of this center, explains that they chose UDS Enterprise because "we wanted to deploy Linux desktops and it was the only VDI solution that allowed us to do it".

The possibility of deploying Windows and Linux desktops also “was a decisive aspect” for the University of Murcia, says Virginio García, Systems Technician of this organization, which coincides in this regard with Manuel Galán Lara, from the Computer Service of the University of Jaén, who indicates that “was one of the particular specifications of the University to contract a VDI software.”

The experience of the University of Cadiz is so positive that the Computer Systems and Central Infrastructure Coordinator, Aberlardo Belaustegui, states that “the virtualization of custom Linux desktops with UDS Enterprise is an indispensable tool for training“.

Other universities pioneers in the use of Open Source tools in teaching also have been relying for years on UDS Enterprise. “Managing and connecting to Windows and Linux desktops allowing students to use Open Source tools and software was one of the challenges we were able to solve thanks to UDS Enterprise,” says Juan Jesus Farfán Leiva, Assistant Director of Virtual Teaching and Laboratories Technological of the University of Málaga.

As for the University of Seville, they were looking for a VDI connection broker capable of deploying a 100% Open Source VDI solution with oVirt and decided to trust on UDS Enterprise “for its success in other universities”, explains Miguel Rueda, Director of the Information and Communication Services Department.

Also the University of Louvain (Belgium) has implemented its Linux desktop virtualization platform with UDS Enterprise. In this case, it was also decisive that it is the only VDI connection broker certified as OpenNebula Ready that publishes on this cloud orchestrator.

In addition to these universities, educational centers around the world, such as the University of Michigan-Flint, University of Sarajevo , Central University of Venezuela, University of Istmo in Panama, Kelaniya University in Sri Lanka or Konkuk University in Seoul have downloaded our software to deploy, manage and access both Windows and Linux virtual desktops.
