VDI-in-a-Box disappears from the market

The Citrix CEO Mark Templeton has announced that they will end sales on VDI-in-a-Box. This decision is part of a series of actions that the company is performing in order to reduce the number of products in its portfolio and give greater weight to the ones that generate higher benefits.

Templeton said that this desktop virtualization solution "will be replaced by a more simple one which will have a more competitive price", but he hasn't given any detail in this regard so far.

The truth is that the disappearance of VDI-in-a-Box had been rumored since Citrix acquired Kaviza, the company thdeveloper of the software, in May 2011, as some analysts saw this move as an attempt to put an end to the competition. Others thought that they would try to unite the virtues of XenDesktop and VDI-in-a-Box to create a VDI platform, but this never happened.

However, VDI-in-a-Box has been on the market for four years as Citrix desktop virtualization solution for SMEs. But apparently, they have not felt the need to keep two entirely different VDI platforms as they cannot offer the possibility of migrating from one to another.

Now we must wait and see if they will really offer a new product that will replace VDI-in-a-Box. In all likelihood we will have to wait for the event Citrix Sinergy, which will be held next May in Orlando to get rid of doubts.
