The benefits of VDI for universities

Educational environments must take advantage of advances in technology and, at the same time, adapt to the new habits of students, teachers and administrative staff.

The proliferation of the use of mobile devices and the advantages in terms of management, costs saving, availability, flexibility, and accessibility make desktop virtualization an interesting option to take into account for universities, since it also makes more easy the management and deployment of workstations.

From a technological point of view, the BYOD trend (Bring Your Own Device) increasingly associated to the A3 concept: anytime-anywhere-anydevice (access your job from anywhere, at anytime and from any device) makes virtual desktop technology (VDI) to be studied as a possible alternative to the current corporate physical equipment in the University environment.

On the other hand, from an economic point of view, VDI arises as a solution to the problem of the renewal of the microcomputing technology park. Cost savings and simplification in the management of computer equipment of universities are two of the advantages obtained by implementing a virtual desktops solution at a University.

The life of the current workstations (most of them PCs and laptops) running local applications is increasingly required to be greater, and a model of physical equipment renewal associated with the software requirements to run is hardly sustainable. If we move the computation of local CPUs to virtual environments, we can take advantage of all the corporate teams as terminals of access to virtual desktops, greatly increasing the useful life of the same and reducing the costs of renovation of the computer.

In addition, virtual desktops enable centralized management of applications and the standardization of job profiles (teachers, administrative staff, students) improving the deployment of workstations and reducing the incidents related to its use.

Availability and accessibility are the main benefits for users, since they can have the corporate applications on a single desktop and access from any device, while maintaining the same user experience.

Thanks to this virtual infrastructure, applications are available at all times and you can access the corporate workstations using any device (PCs, laptops, smartphones, tablets…) at any time and from anywhere.

In this way, teachers, students ans staff have greater flexibility and convenience when it comes to their work or their studies, which results in greater efficiency and higher productivity.
